A six-line bet covers six numbers and pays 5 to 1. On a European wheel with 37 pockets and on an American wheel with 38, its house edge matches a single-number bet on the same wheel: 2.70% on the European wheel and 5.26% on the American. The six-line bet wins more often, 6 times in 37 or 38, but each win pays less. The expected loss per unit staked does not change with the number of numbers you cover.

The edge, worked out

The standard payout for a six-number bet is 5 to 1, which means a winning unit returns 6 units including the stake. The expected value per unit is the chance of winning times the profit, minus the chance of losing times the stake. These are our calculations from the wheel counts. Wikipedia’s roulette article gives the same single-number house-edge figures and the same wheel definitions (Wikipedia, Roulette, checked 17 October 2026).

Wheel and bet Win chance per bet Payout Expected loss per 1 unit
European, single number 1/37 = 2.70% 35 to 1 2.70%
European, six-line 6/37 = 16.22% 5 to 1 2.70%
American, single number 1/38 = 2.63% 35 to 1 5.26%
American, six-line 6/38 = 15.79% 5 to 1 5.26%
Bar chart: the expected loss on a European wheel is 2.70% for both the single number and the six-line bet; on an American wheel it is 5.26% for both.
Our chart from the table above. Equal bars are equal edges; the difference is how often a bet wins.

A peso example at ₱100 a bet

Take a session of ten six-line bets at ₱100 each, ₱1,000 staked in total. These numbers are a hypothetical session, not a record of play.

  • European wheel: the expected loss is about ₱27.03 (₱1,000 × 2.70%).
  • American wheel: the expected loss is about ₱52.63 (₱1,000 × 5.26%).

The chance of at least one win in ten bets is about 83% on the European wheel and about 82% on the American. For the same ten bets on single numbers, it is about 24% and 23%. The average loss is the same; the way the money moves is not. A six-line session wins more often in small amounts, and a single-number session goes longer without a win.

What the win rate does and does not tell you

A higher win rate does not reduce the house edge. It changes the pattern of results. The expected loss stays fixed at the edge for each bet, so a six-line session can still lose the whole stake over time. Win frequency also does not say how much a session will lose in any single night. Our figures describe the average over many bets, not a promise for your session.

Two wheels should not be compared as if they were the same game. The American wheel adds a 00 pocket, which lifts the edge on single-number and six-line bets to 5.26%. Check which wheel your table uses before you read a figure from this page.

How to check a table before you bet

  1. Confirm the wheel type: count the pockets, or read the table limit card, and note whether there is a 00.
  2. Find the payout on the table layout for the bet you plan to place. A six-number bet should show 5 to 1.
  3. Multiply your total stake by the edge for that wheel to get the expected loss over that session.
  4. Set the session budget before you sit down, and treat the expected loss as the cost of playing rather than a forecast.
